The iconic Expedition Foods brand, made in Great Britain, is associated with the demanding conditions of adventure and extreme sports and has fuelled sailors, rowers, ultramarathoners, mountaineers, explorers and adventurers alike since 1995.
Organisers of the Global Solo Challenge are delighted to announce that Expedition Foods will be one of the Event Suppliers offering a substantial discount to all participants: offering 22 different freeze-dried meals and 4 desserts.
Their meals come in a choice of 3 serving sizes: regular (450 kcal), High Energy (800+ kcal), and Extreme Energy (1000 kcal) ranges. The meals suit everyone’s needs with vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and dairy-free meals available. The brand has several accolades to its name and has been the food of choice for several record-holders in adventures sports across many disciplines.
Provisioning for a circumnavigation
“One of the most difficult tasks in preparing for a circumnavigation is provisioning for such a prolonged time, freeze-dried food will be the prominent choice of food on smaller weight-conscious boats.” “Everyone will carry a combination of freeze-dried meals, dried foods, cheap noodles and some occasional treat. Maintaining a balanced diet is as important as keeping the spirits high,” commented event Director Marco Nannini, “variety is a morale-boosting factor.”

Expedition foods offers an additional choice for the skippers in provisioning their boats alongside other previously announced brands. Each sailor will want to try the various recipes in advance and carry a variety of meals, meal types and even brands during their circumnavigation.
“In 2008 Alex Thomson abandoned the Vendée Globe. After reaching land, he gave all his provisions to his brother David who was then taking part in the Class40 class of the Portimao Global Ocean Race.””Three years later, a whole dry bag of those meals was still on the boat I had since bought when I was at the start of the 2011 Global Ocean Race. Our stores were a mix of the leftovers of the Thomson brothers with a few additions of Morrisons 18p-a-pack noodles and some other expired meals I had gotten cheaply off eBay. I think I know a thing or two about offshore sailing on a tight budget. My boat was jokingly called Financial Crisis.” Added Marco Nannini.
Fleet discounts and a budget-friendly event
“These experiences led me to the idea of developing a budget-friendly event, and we keep trying to negotiate fleet discounts to make everyone’s participation more affordable.”
“We have struck an important deal for boat insurance which was one of the recurring concerns of potential entries. We are working on a group discount with a leading manufacturer of Solas A approved liferafts which are mandatory within our regulations.
“We have initiated preliminary discussions with some potential sponsors. However, our priorities at present are two: making the event attractive and attract entries. We are confident that the rest will follow.”
“We received 250 applications in five months, 170 by sailboat owners and 19 skippers have already signed up. We are more than two years from the first departure and we know we are in a strong place right now.” Concluded Nannini.
