As someone aiming to circle Antarctica, I attended the Great Antarctica Exhibition. Near my home, there’s a “Wharf Park” marking the departure site of the Kainan Maru, and I occasionally play with my child on the playground equipment modeled after the Kainan Maru. This wooden sailing ship was only 100ft long and had an 18-horsepower engine (which probably offered little forward capability). It was evidently a great adventure at the time.
Looking at the globe again, Antarctica is huge, and the Drake Passage is narrow.
