I still remember the first time I saw the ocean… which is a little concerning, given I’m now trying to sail around the whole thing (ALONE) 😅
There’s something genuinely absurd about growing up in landlocked Zimbabwe and becoming obsessed with sailing – most people around me had never set foot on a boat. For years, I stopped saying it out loud, because the dream sounded ridiculous the second it left my mouth.
And now, somehow, we’re prepping for the Global Solo Challenge in 2027… it still doesn’t feel real typing that 🙉
Look – I’m a guy you’ve probably only just met, asking you to help get a boat to a start line. I won’t dress it up: I can’t do this on my own. Without people choosing to back it, I don’t make the start line. That’s just the truth of where I am.
Which is part of why I went with the notes-on-the-boat idea. Out there it’s just you and the water for months – the same ocean that touches every coast on the planet, including the one I grew up nowhere near. So carrying someone’s message across all of it feels like the closest thing I can offer: taking a piece of you somewhere almost no one ever gets to go. Your words, to whoever matters to you, carried 25,000 miles around the world and back home.
People have been writing to their kids, their partners, their parents, the version of themselves they’re still hoping to become – I absolutely love seeing all of your notes coming through ❤️
