Where does your passion for sailing come from?
I have been dreaming of sailing and far off tropical destinations only accessible by boat since I was a young boy. When I was 17 years old I started working on charter sailboats in Lahaina, Hawaii and I have been in love with sailing and the ocean ever since. A few years ago my wife and I were finally able to purchase our own racing sailboat that I raced with my team locally for the past 2 years before the fires of August 8th destroyed her and the rest of the fleet.
What lessons have you learnt from sailing?
I have learned many things from sailing and being on the water for the last 20 + years. Patience, Perseverance, Humility, Pure contentment of being in the present moment.
Since I started racing two years ago, I have been blessed with community and friendships that have been amazing.
What brought you to like single-handed sailing?
I enjoy the challenge of problem solving and thinking how to do maneuvers and handle the boat by myself. I enjoy the solitude of just me, my boat, and the ocean – similar to hiking solo in the mountains.
What prompted you to sign up for this event?
I have been wanting to do a non-stop solo circumnavigation since I was 14 years old, only recently have I put more thought and effort into making it a reality- a friend suggested I do it in a race or some organized event rather than by myself. So I started looking into events that would fit and this seems like the best fit. Ronnie Simpson who raced in the GSC2023 helped me get my start in local racing here in Hawaii, so obviously seeing him in the race has inspired/prompted me to sign up. I have had a few life events recently that have once again illuminated my perspective that life is short and it is I who must work and take action towards achieving my dreams – I don’t want to wake up one day and say if only/ I could have – I want to put it all on the line and see what I can do.
How do you plan to prepare for this event?
I plan to purchase a boat in the next 6 months to a year and then spend time getting familiar with it. looking at doing the Single Handed Transpac 2025, then spending time with the boat in Hawaii. In spring of 2027 move boat to Europe and do a few events prior to GSC2027. Expand my knowledge of maritime weather, particularly in the Southern ocean and Atlantic. I think it is important to prepare mentally for this journey – coping skills, mental fortitude, perseverance.
What do you think will be the biggest challenge?
Like many others have said – just getting to the starting line, I am not a professional sailor and will be trying to make this happen on a small budget.
The uncertainty of a circumnavigation – you can prepare yourself, the boat, and plan for everything but it still takes a bit of luck/ good fortune to make it to the finish line – my dream is to pull all this together and make it all the way around.
Tell us about your boat or the boat you would like to have.
Class 40 – Looking at a bit older designs as they are more budget friendly. I like a couple that are on the market right now but I haven’t had a formal look yet.
Sailing experience
No special sailing achievements … Mostly local (Hawaii) sailing and Racing for the past 24 years.
