Where does your passion for sailing come from?
When I was a little boy, I went to sailing clubs on the river and looked at the boats. They fascinated me. They were like spaceships to me. These were bad times in Poland. If you wanted a boat, you could only build it. I was a dozen years old when I built the first open-deck boat. A new life began for me.
What lessons have you learnt from sailing?
Sailing is the best school of life. There is no room for poor quality. A boat with a human on it is the most perfect organism. Riding the waves together. Everything is harmony.
What brought you to like single-handed sailing?
Everything depends on us. We have all our actions in our heads. Sailing alone gives the strongest and deepest feeling of being on a boat, on the Ocean. You talk to the birds, say good morning to the sun, pat and hug the boat. You sing at the top of your lungs, you cry with longing and happiness.
What prompted you to sign up for this event?
The Global Solo Challenge is excellent. I can sail on a boat that I built myself. Do it properly. Circumnavigating the world non-stop is my dream.
How do you plan to prepare for this event?
I’m launching my boat in 2024. Before that, it will be partially prepared to meet the GSC requirements. In 2025 I will sail around the Atlantic. I’m planning on sailing a few thousand miles then I’ll be doing the qualification. I will then draw conclusions and correct mistakes. I will be taking care of the boat.
What do you think will be the biggest challenge?
It is obvious that there is a lot of work to be done before sailing. Preparing everything to be self-sufficient at the other end of the world. It is also a challenge to manage all we leave at home. Our loved ones stay here. Then you need to find your way to the Southern Ocean. Home and the Southern Ocean are the biggest challenges.
Tell us about your boat or the boat you would like to have.
I will sail on a boat that I built myself. It is ten meters long. The boat is built in sandwich with Airex core. It is light and strong. She is my dream. I will try to sail smoothly. I think I will be happy with Atom.
Do you intend to link this personal challenge to a social cause?
In 2016, I sailed across the Atlantic on a five-meter plywood boat. I also built it with my own hands. Many people followed in my footsteps and now I help others with the construction and preparations of their boats for sailing the Oceans. I like infecting people. The most important thing is to do something with your life.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
When I think, and I think all the time, about the Global Solo Challenge, I know that I will do something absolutely exciting for myself. I followed the 2023-2024 GSC every day. I think about skippers and their boats. Be at the start and reach the end. I’m crazy about doing this.
Sailing experience
I sailed on the Baltic Sea for years. In 2016, I sailed alone across the Atlantic on a plywood boat. Lisbon, Sagres, Santa Cruz in Tenerife, Martinique. Tenerife-Martinique 26 days. In total, I have been sailing for 35 years. I have sailed several tens of thousands of miles. I built a dozen boats or so…
