People constantly ask how me how to handle a boat solo, or comment that it must be hard to sail solo, and I always say the same thing: it just requires following the steps and the process. And of course practice! My 24 hour solo sail this week was a great chance to practice maneuvers in 10 or 15 knots and flat water with all the big sails up. Here, I’m gybing my masthead spinnaker and full mainsail. My process is – drive deep, center traveler, center main sheet, bring on new runner, prepare to gybe, gybe, ease old runner, ease main, ease kite once full, and then travel down and find a good course to steer. Practice makes perfect, but I was pretty happy with all of my boat handling and maneuvers in 10 knots, it will be good to ramp that up to bigger breeze on my qualifier.
