The Best Rig for Offshore Sailing in Heavy Weather

What is the best offshore sailing setup for #HeavyWeather 🌊⛵️⛈️

For me, it will always be the cutter. 2 headsails and a main. With this setup I can distribute the pressure of the wind into three sails equally, and that helps protect against strong gusty winds.

If I had a sloop the boat would only carry two sails, and those sails would have to be larger to hold the same amount of canvas. If I got hit by a strong gust, my boat could get knocked down.

A ketch is also great but then I have even more to manage and I start to lose simplicity… which, as a solo sailor, is incredibly important.

So what do you think? What’s the best rig to have for offshore sailing?
