GSC and the Environment

The construction of modern boats can have substial negative environmental inpact with the estimated emissions of building and campaigning a 60ft new racing boat that can reach 6000 tons of emitted CO2.

The GSC is committed to an environmentally conscious event through a few simple but essential points.

REUSE BEFORE RECYCLE

The constrution of new boats is actively discouraged, in principle and in practice, reducing a campaign’s emission of CO2 drammatically. New boats are in fact implicitly penalised by the handicapping system in use.

EXTEND SERVICE LIFE

The reuse of older boats is not only permitted but encouraged and this choice can even constitute a competitive advantage. The same principle should apply to equipment that can be serviced rather than replaced new-for-old.

CAP ON FOSSIL FUELS

Each boat can carry a maximum amount of fossil fuels to encourage the use of alternative sources of energy, solar, wind and hydro.
